The Abukumagawa River System Maintenance Program
The maintenance program of the Abukumagawa River has been launched in March 2007. It has been implemented to achieve the integrated goal in the field of the control and effective use of river water and the river environment.
However, the Pacific coast of the Tohoku Region including the Abukumagawa Estuary has been severely affected by the earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku on March 11, 2011 and subsequent tsunami and widespread subsidence.
In the wake of the disaster, the maintenance program of the Abukumagawa River system (the area under control of the MLIT) was revised on November 20, 2012, to expedite the restoration and recovery of the affected areas, as well as to promote the prevention and mitigation of disasters in collaboration with the local municipalities.
The revised river maintenance program factors in tsunami that had never been considered as external force so far, and reflects our experience in the Great East Japan Earthquake. For example, in the revised program the height of the levee has been changed.
