Road Projects and Our Approach

Tohoku-Chuo Expressway

The Tohoku-Chuo Expressway is a High-Standard Highway, extending to about 268 kilometers in total, which runs from Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, via Fukushima, Yonezawa, Yamagata, and Shinjo, to Yokote, Akita Prefecture, where it connects to the Akita Expressway.

This expressway connects major inland cities of Fukushima, Yamagata, and Akita Prefectures, as well as the Expressways of Joban, Tohoku Jukan, Yamagata, and Akita. It is therefore an important route that provides a framework for a High-Standard Highway web in south Tohoku, and enhances a network function that not only facilitates interregional traffic but also provides an emergency substitute or detour.

The introduction of the Tohoku-Chuo Expressway is expected to reduce the transportation time, thereby facilitating the expansion of interregional collaboration or exchanging network. There will be a number of effects: creation of a new regional identity, mitigation of traffic congestion, improved emergency medical services, improved living environment, etc.

Even if the Tohoku Jukan Expressway faces closure due to a disaster or accident, the Tohoku-Chuo Expressway will ensure punctuality and constant speed of traffic by providing the equivalent traffic function.
